Margaret Chase Smith Becomes First Woman to Serve Both Houses of Congress

On this day in 1948, Margaret Chase Smith was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress.

Senator Smith, a moderate Republican, ran for the presidency in 1964 and was the second longest-serving female senator in U.S. history.
